Fire Breaks Out At Unisa Campus

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, teams from Unisa’s Protection Services and Facilities Management arrived on the scene in order to contain a fire.

The fire broke out at 01:00 am on 21 December 2022 at Unisa’s Muckleneuk Campus at the Block B building of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

The on-site team was led by Mr Feresane Sibeko of Facilities Management and Mr Victor Khethani of Protection Services. This team was joined by Prof Puleng LenkaBula who is the Principal and Vice Chancellor of Unisa.

The on-site team contacted the City of Tshwane Fire Department, who later managed to contain the fire. After the fire was contained it was reported that there were no injuries.

An investigation, in line with protocols, will be launched by Unisa, the City of Tshwane Fire Department and SAPS.

The investigation will help determine the cause of the fire as well as the extent of the damage. The investigation report will guide management on the next steps.

Prof Puleng LenkaBula has stated that the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela building will not be open for access during the investigation, for health and safety reasons.

The affected staff members who work in the building where the fire occurred will be communicated to via line function communication.
