About NSFAS

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a South African government student financial aid scheme which helps needy students pay their registration fees, tuition fees, accommodation, grant them meal allowances and books allowance. NSFAS provides this loan to qualifying students who wish to study or are already studying at TVET colleges and public universities. These students must be coming from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.

NSFAS is funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).

Who Qualifies for NSFAS Funding?

You qualify for a NSFAS funding if you are a South African citizen who plans to study in 2021 or you are already studying at a TVET college or a public university. You must meet the following requirements:

  • If you are a South African citizen
  • If you are a SASSA grant recipient
  • If your combined household income is not more than R350 000 per year
  • Persons with disability whose combined household income is not more than R600 000 per year
  • Applicants who first registered at university before 2018 whose household income is not more than R122 000 per year

Who Should Not Apply for the Bursary?

According to NSFAS’ official website, you should not apply for NSFAS if you meet the following criteria:

  • A non-South African citizen
  • If you have completed a previous tertiary qualification.
  • If you have already applied and received funding in previous years
  • If your total household income is over R350 000 per year

NSFAS Application Required Documents

You will also need the following to complete your NSFAS application:

  • A valid cellphone number and email address
  • Copy of your South African ID or birth certificate
  • ID copies of parents, guardian or spouse
  • Your proof of income or 1 year’s IRP5 (if applicable)
  • Your parents, guardian or spouse’s proof of income (if applicable)
  • If you receive SASSA grant, no proof of income will be required
  • Applicants with a disability must submit a completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form, click here to download
  • An applicant who is recognized as a Vulnerable Child by the Department of Social Development must provide a completed and signed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form, click here to download

NSFAS Online Application: How to Apply for NSFAS

NSFAS Application online has been made easier. You can apply for NSFAS online using a computer, laptop, tablet or a smartphone. Follow these simple steps for NSFAS online application:

  • STEP 1: Go to NSFAS website www.nsfas.org.za
  • STEP 2: Click on the ‘myNSFAS’ tab
  • STEP 3: Create a myNSFAS account
  • STEP 4: Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab and answer the questions on the screen
  • STEP 5: Upload your application supporting documents and then click on ‘Submit’ to submit your NSFAS application

After you submit your application, your application reference number will appear on the screen. The reference number will also be sent to the email address and cellphone number and email address you registered with.

To check your NSFAS application status, click here and follow the simple steps. Once you have been approved for NSFAS funding, the bursary will pay for your course registration, tuition fees, accommodation, and provide you with allowance for food and study material.
