Bursaries provided by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme ensure that higher education is accessible to students from poor and working-class backgrounds. Students are advised to check their bursary application status to see if they will receive funding for the upcoming academic year.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) called on students to check their bursary applications status. The bursary application status will inform the student if they are being funded for the 2023 academic year.

Nsfas received more than 1.6 million funding applications for the 2023 academic year. A total of 941,491 students who submitted bursary applications were approved for funding in 2023.

When a student checks their applications status, it will reflect either application approved or application declined. This informs students if they have been provisionally funded.

Application Approved indicates that a student has been provisionally approved for funding for the upcoming academic year.

Institutions of Higher Learning are required to provide proof of registration before Nsfas begins distributing funding for a student. Once a student’s registration has been confirmed by the university of TVET college, they will be officially funded for the 2023 academic year.

Nsfas advised students to complete their registration at a public institution of their choice for a Nsfas funded course if they are not yet registered.

Application Declined indicates that a student does not meet one or more of the requirements for funding.

Nsfas revealed that 317,335 bursary applications were unsuccessful. The financial aid scheme said the unsuccessful applicants did not meet the Nsfas funding requirements.

It’s important to note that all unsuccessful applicants can submit an appeal if they believe they meet the criteria to receive Nsfas funding in 2023. This appeal must be sent within 30 days of them racing the rejection status.

Nsfas also revealed that 206,781 applicants are awaiting evaluation while 37,849 students are awaiting financial eligibility assessment and confirmation from third parties.

Students whose Nsfas applications are successful will receive comprehensive funding, as Nsfas will cover their tuition and accommodation fees. Students will also be eligible to receive several allowances to cover additional costs related to their studies.
