The cost of higher education in South Africa has increased tremendously over the years and to offer financial support to students wishing to pursue tertiary education, the government provides funding through various bursary opportunities including the Department of Higher Education and Training bursary.
The DHET bursary, commonly known as the National Student Financial Aid Scheme bursary covers tuition fees as well as the registration fees for deserving students pursuing various undergraduate qualifications.
Additional expenses the DHET bursary may cover includes, study material, food allowance, incidental/ personal care, as well as accommodation or transport fees.
Here’s how to apply online for the DHET bursary:
- Create a myNsfas account using this link:Â https://my.nsfas.org.za/
- If you have an existing myNsfas account, click on ‘login’ when going to myNsfas and complete your information
- If you don’t have a myNsfas account, click on ‘Create account’
- Log into your myNsfas account
- Click on ‘Apply’
- Answer the questions on the screen
- Upload the required supporting documents
- Click on ‘Submit’
- You will then receive an application reference number
Once you have successfully completed and submitted your application, you can track your application status using the following steps:
- Login to your NSFAS account on the myNSFAS portal
- Enter your username and password and sign in
- Click on ‘Track Funding Progress’
After you clicked on the ‘Track Funding Progress’ option, you will receive one of several application statuses.
You will then be able to determine whether NSFAS needs to take any further action to approve or decline your funding application or whether the scheme requires any additional documentation or information to finalise your application.
