IEB Applications for May 2023 Examinations Now Open

The Independent Examinations Board released its results for the matric class of 2022 on 18 January 2023. If you are among candidates who aren’t pleased with the marks achieved in your exam, there’s an opportunity to take another try.

The Independent Examinations Board’s matric class of 2022 achieved a 98.42% pass rate, which is slightly higher than the pass rate of 98.39% in 2021.

Although the Board’s CEO Anne Oberholzer said the performance of the cohort of learners was outstanding, there are some candidates that were not entirely pleased with their marks for their own reasons.

Fortunately, these individuals were afforded the opportunity to apply for a remark, which is subject to Umalusi’s approval, and the results are expected to be released on 1 March 2023.

The Department of Basic Education explained that a re-mark means that examination scripts will be marked for a second time and a re-check of scripts is a further check to ensure that all questions are duly marked and that all marks are correctly calculated.

In a statement, the IEB has also announced:

Applications for learners who qualify to enrol for the May/June 2023 examinations will remain open from 1 March 2023 until 15 March 2023.

There are a number of circumstances that may lead to an individual wanting to rewrite their final IEB matric exams, but only a select few qualify to sit for the IEB NSC Supplementary.

The May/June 2023 examination period will be applicable for the following learners:

  1. Students who were absent in November 2021
  2. Students who wish to improve on their November marks

During this exam, candidates will be permitted to apply for any number of subjects (except for Life Orientation and will have to write both papers in subjects that have a Paper 1 and Paper 2.

According to the IEB, individuals will have to apply online to rewrite their final matric examinations and the cost is R1510 per paper.

After the exam papers have been marked and resulted, the matric rewrite candidates ought to apply to receive a “combined” IEB final Grade 12 certificate.
