The SA Navy is a modern, balanced and credible Navy that commands international respect and contributes to the safety, security, and welfare of South Africa in times of peace and war. The South African Navy uses ships and submarines to conduct its business and its fleet is based in Simon’s Town (Cape Town). The South African Navy has Naval Stations in Durban and Port Elizabeth. The Headquarters is situated in Pretoria.

About This Training Programme

As part of the South African Military Skills Development System (MSDS), the South African Navy Traineeship / Learnership offers young South African citizens an opportunity to serve in the MSDS over two years as Submariner or Diver. The voluntary service system aims to equip and develop young South Africans with the required skills to compete in the open market.

During the two years of training, young recruits will receive Military Training and Functional Training. In the second year, recruits will be deployed and given the opportunity to use their knowledge and developed skills in practice.

Applicants will be required to Psychometric Testing, Medical Evaluation, Vetting of criminal record, and Verification of Qualifications for the selection process. Diver applicants will be required for a Swimming evaluation.

Who Can Apply?

Anyone who is a South African citizen, holds a Matric Certificate, or a Graduate who is interested in becoming a Diver or Submariner.

General Minimum Requirements: 

  • South African Citizen (No dual citizenship)
  • Matric Certificate (No transcripts)
  • Have an Admission Points Score (APS) of 20 – 24, excluding Life Orientation
  • No criminal record
  • Not area bound
  • Preferably single
  • Comply with the Medical fitness requirement for appointments in the SANDF

Minimum Requirements for Submariner Applicants:

  • Must have completed Maths and Physical Science: At least level 4 for both subjects
  • Comply with the Medical fitness requirement for appointments in the SANDF
  • Free from physical disability and not suffering from claustrophobia or fear of heights
  • Willingness to be exposed to water activities

Minimum Requirements for Diver Applicants: 

  • Applicants between 18yrs and 22yrs
  • Must have completed Maths and Physical Science: At least level 4 for both subjects
  • Comply with the Medical fitness requirement for appointments in the SANDF
  • Free from physical disability and not suffering from claustrophobia or fear of heights
  • Be a strong swimmer and willing to take part in general water activities and Pass the SA Navy swimming evaluation

  • Certified copy of ID Document
  • Certified copy of Matric certificate
  • Certified copies of Highest qualifications (Degree, National Diploma, or N6 with Trade Test, transcripts of N4 and N5)
  • A short CV

South African Navy Requirments

  • Compulsory Medical fitness (applicants will have to undergo the prescribed SANDF military health examination).
  • Compulsory Psychometric tests with proof.
  • Prove criminal records by the Criminal Record Bureau for verification.
  • Applications complying with the minimum requirements will be subjected to further screening.
  • Shortlisted candidates identified will then be invited to partake in a selection process.

SA Navy Selection process.

  • Psychometric evaluation: This is done to assess the candidate’s aptitude and potential to develop in the position that was applied for.
  • The nature of these tests will depend on the position applied for.
  • A Selection Board will be conducted in order to assess the applicant’s interest in the position applied for, as well as his or her interest in the Defence Force in general.
  • The interview will also focus on self-confidence, leadership potential, and communication skills.
  • A comprehensive medical evaluation will be conducted by appointed military medical practitioners in order to assess the applicant’s medical history and current medical status.
  • All applicants must be declared fit for military training before commencement.
  • The fingerprints of applicants will be sent to the Criminal Record Bureau for verification.
    Records of convictions will be evaluated based on the severity thereof and how recently the offense (s) occurred.
