CAO is the Central Applications Office. They are a centralised applications service offering access to the fullest range of study opportunities in Higher and Further Education in Southern Africa. Here’s how to submit a hard-copy CAO application.
Many higher education institutions in South Africa, mainly Kwazulu-Natal, use CAO for their applications. There are different ways to submit your CAO application, one of the ways is by using a hard-copy application.
Here’s how to submit a hard-copy CAO application.
- Go to the CAO website
- Read How to use the programme list
- Refer to the summary of codes used
- Use the ‘Index’ to find which page the programme is on
- Download the application form from the site or ask your school for an application form. Forms are also available from the Universities and DBE District offices.
- Fill in the application form with all relevant details
- Pay application fee
- Attach required documents and proof of payment to the form of declaration
- Post to CAO OR hand in at CAO offices OR email it
- Post: Private Bag X06, Dalbridge, 4014

- Keep receipt and make a note of CAO number and password in order to track your application status later
Hard copy applications might take up to two or three weeks to process after CAO receives them along with the administration fee.
