The cost of tertiary education can prevent thousands of students from obtaining a tertiary education qualification. Bursaries ensure that students don’t have to worry about these costs, however, students must meet certain requirements to qualify for a DHET bursary.
The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) aims to develop capable, well-educated and skilled citizens who are able to compete in a sustainable, diversified and knowledge-intensive international economy, which meets the development goals of the country.
To achieve this goal, the DHET provides bursaries to hundreds of thousands of students annually. This bursary is provided to students through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas).
Students who attend public universities and TVET colleges can apply for the DHET bursary as long as they meet the DHET bursary requirements.
The DHET bursary is often referred to as the Nsfas bursary.
Here Are The DHET Bursary Requirements
To qualify for a Nsfas bursary, a student must beÂ
- A South African citizen
- Enrolled in an approved course at a public university or a TVET college.
- Have a household income not exceeding R350,000 per annum (Able-bodied students)
- Have a household income not exceeding R600,000 per annum (Disabled students)
- Students who started studying before 2018 whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.
