Here Are The School Terms For 2023

The most recent calendar for the 2023 school year has been released by the Department of Basic Education. The calendar indicates how the school year will be divided into four terms over the course of 43 weeks.

For coastal provinces, the 2023 school year will commence on 18 January, and for inland provinces on 11 January.

Both inland and coastal public schools will have 199 official school days spanning across 43 weeks. A total of eight public holidays fall within this period.

Public schools part of the inland cluster will begin and end term 1 a week before coastal schools. However, the 2023 school calendar is the same for the rest of the year.

The Coastal Cluster consists of the Eastern Cape, the Northern Cape, the Western Cape and Kwa-Zulu Natal.

The Inland Cluster consists of the Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the North West.

Term Dates for The Coastal Cluster

  • Term 1: 18 January – 31 March
  • Term 2: 12 April – 23 June
  • Term 3: 18 July – 29 September
  • Term 4: 10 October – 13 December

Term Dates for The Inland Cluster

  • Term 1: 11 January – 24 March
  • Term 2: 12 April – 23 June
  • Term 3: 18 July – 29 September
  • Term 4: 10 October – 13 December

The 2023 school year will end for all public schools on 13 December.
