Qualifying unemployed individuals may apply for the Social Relief of Distress Grant online. Before individuals can be provided with the outcome of their social grant application, the grant goes through a number of processes.
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) in Mpumalanga has confirmed that the approval of one of the social grants follows a process – one being a verification process.
The government agency stated that the Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD) applicants should note that if their application is still pending, it means it’s not yet verified.
According to Sassa, the SRD grant applicants ought to be aware that the agency does not only verify banking details but also verifies citizenship with the Department of Home Affairs, and this includes checking whether the person is UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund) registered or not through the Department of Employment and Labour.
In a statement, Sassa has confirmed:
When the applicant has successfully passed all verification, Sassa will approve the application and the status will be updated to ‘approved’.
On the contrary, should the SRD application status state ‘pending’, it then indicates that the verification has not yet been finalised.
Some SRD grant holders have complained about payments being delayed even after their grant application has been approved by the Agency.
In some cases, these delays are caused by grant beneficiaries not providing banking account details as Sassa has shared that some of them only choose the name of the bank where they want to get the grant.
Grant beneficiaries have been reminded to keep on checking their personal details to ensure that they are correct and the grant funds are received by the right person.
